Window wraps in New York City have specific rules depending on how and why they’re applied.

What Are Window Wraps?
Window wraps are custom-designed vinyl coverings applied to the exterior or interior of windows. They serve a variety of purposes, including advertising, branding, decoration, and privacy enhancement. These wraps can cover the entire window or specific sections, featuring vibrant graphics, text, or images to convey a message or create an appealing aesthetic.
Window wraps are made from durable materials like perforated vinyl, which allows visibility from the inside while showcasing vibrant designs on the outside. They are weather-resistant and long-lasting, making them a popular choice for both temporary and permanent applications.

Types of Window Wraps We Offer
Window wraps come in several formats — each built for a different glass coverage goal, visibility need, and installation environment.
We print and install all types in-house across NYC, Brooklyn, New Jersey, and the tri-state area.

Opaque Window Wraps
Solid vinyl covering the entire glass surface. Full-color graphics, complete light blockage. The window becomes a printed billboard. Used for retail campaigns, vacancy coverings, privacy, and maximum visual impact.

Perforated Window Wraps
Vinyl with tiny perforations that display graphics outside while allowing see-through visibility from inside. Available in 50/50, 60/40, and 70/30 ratios. The signature window wrap product for storefronts.

Partial Window Wraps
Covering a zone of the glass — a horizontal band, the lower half, or a defined section — while the rest stays clear. Balances advertising with an open, visible storefront. Opaque or perforated by zone.

Coming Soon Wraps
Full-coverage window graphics for active construction and renovation sites. NYC DOB requires windows covered during construction — we turn that requirement into branded “coming soon” graphics and developer marketing.
We Always Recommend Outside. The Reason Is Simple.
★ Recommended — Outside (1st Surface)
The Print Faces the Street — No Glass in the Way
The graphic faces outward with nothing between the print and the viewer. This is how we install the vast majority of window wraps — and here’s why:
- Strongest colors and sharpest detail — no glass filtering or softening the image
- No competing reflections — daylight glare hits behind the graphic, not in front of it
- Required for perforated vinyl — one-way vision only works with the printed side facing out
- No reverse printing — what you proof is what the street sees, no mirror-image complexity
- 3–5 year durability — outdoor-rated vinyl with UV overlaminate handles NYC weather
Best for: nearly all storefront, retail, restaurant, and commercial projects
Situational — Inside (2nd Surface)
Protected by Glass — But Visually Compromised
The glass shields the vinyl from weather and vandalism, but that protection comes at a cost:
- Muted colors — graphics look softer through glass, especially tinted or coated
- Glare and reflections — exterior glass reflections compete with the printed graphic
- Reverse printing required — artwork must be mirror-printed, adding complexity
- Perforated vinyl won't work — one-way vision effect fails from the inside
- Condensation risk — moisture between vinyl and glass can cause bubbling
Interior application makes sense in specific cases — high-vandalism areas, landmark buildings, or where avoiding the NYC DOB permit process is a priority.
Consider for: vandalism-prone areas, landmark properties, permit avoidance

Window Wraps vs. Decals vs. Frosting — Know the Difference
A window wrap is a large-format vinyl graphic that covers all or most of a glass surface — a storefront window, a glass door, a sidelight, or an entire glass facade. Unlike window decals (individual cut elements placed on glass), window wraps cover the glass itself with a continuous printed surface for branding, advertising, privacy, or compliance.
Window wraps come in two primary materials: opaque vinyl for complete coverage that blocks the view through the glass, and perforated one-way vision vinyl that shows printed graphics outside while allowing see-through visibility from inside. They’re applied to the exterior of the glass (first surface) for maximum color vibrancy and graphic impact — our standard and recommended approach for nearly all storefront projects.
Exterior wall wraps are also possible on smooth building surfaces adjacent to windows — contact us for large-format exterior graphics projects.
Window Wrap vs. Window Decal
A decal is a cut element (logo, lettering, hours) placed on glass. A wrap covers the glass with a continuous printed surface. See window decals →
Window Wrap vs. Window Frosting
Frosting provides translucent privacy with an etched-glass look. Wraps provide full-color graphics and advertising. See window frosting →
Window Wrap vs. Window Tint
Tint is a thin film for UV/heat/glare reduction — functional, not visual. Wraps are printed graphics for branding and advertising.
Perforated vs. Opaque Vinyl
Perforated = see-through from inside, graphics outside. Opaque = blocks view completely. Deep dive on perforated vinyl →

NYC Window Signage Rules & Construction Requirements
Every business with street-facing glass is a candidate. These industries use them most.
Interior-Applied Window Graphics — Generally No Permit Required
In NYC, window graphics applied to the interior side of the glass (second surface) are generally not classified as signs under DOB regulations and do not require a sign permit. This means you can brand your entire storefront without the cost, delays, and restrictions of the permitting process — a major advantage for retail, restaurants, and offices.Exterior-applied window graphics may fall under sign regulations depending on size, illumination, and zoning district. We advise on the best approach for your location during the consultation.
Interior-Applied Window Graphics — Generally No Permit Required

This means you can brand your entire storefront without the cost, delays, and restrictions of the permitting process — a major advantage for retail, restaurants, and offices.Exterior-applied window graphics may fall under sign regulations depending on size, illumination, and zoning district. Construction Site Window Coverage
The NYC Department of Buildings requires windows on active construction and renovation sites to be fully covered for safety and visual compliance. We produce full-color branded wraps that transform this compliance requirement into developer marketing — "coming soon" graphics, architectural renderings, leasing information, and brand identity for the incoming tenant or building.
Disclaimer: NYC signage regulations vary by zoning district, building type, and sign classification. The information above is general guidance, not legal advice. We recommend consulting the NYC DOB or a signage compliance professional for your specific project. Signs New York can assist with the permit process if exterior signage approval is needed.

Keeping Your Window Wraps Looking Sharp
Properly installed window wraps require minimal maintenance.
Cleaning
Exterior wraps: soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid pressure washing directly on edges. Perforated vinyl should never be scrubbed — abrasive cleaning enlarges the perforations. Interior wraps need only a gentle wipe since glass protects them from environmental wear.
Longevity
Opaque vinyl: 3–5 years on exterior glass, longer on interior. Perforated vinyl: 2–4 years — perforations are more susceptible to environmental wear. South-facing windows in full sun age faster. Interior application extends all lifespans significantly.
Removal & Swaps
Window wraps remove cleanly from glass with heat and careful peeling — easier than wall vinyl since glass is non-porous. Seasonal wraps can be swapped multiple times per year. Adhesive residue cleans off with IPA or commercial remover. We store your files for fast reprints.
Frequently Asked Questions
A window decal is a cut element — a logo, lettering, or individual graphic — placed on glass. A window wrap covers the glass itself with a continuous printed surface. Decals go on glass; wraps cover glass. We produce both — see window decals.
With perforated vinyl, yes — tiny holes in the material allow see-through visibility from inside while displaying graphics to the outside. The amount of visibility depends on the perforation ratio. Opaque wraps block the view completely in both directions. For a full breakdown of perforation ratios and how they work, see our perforated window wraps page.
Interior-applied window graphics generally do not require a DOB sign permit in New York City. Exterior-applied graphics may fall under sign regulations depending on size, illumination, and zoning. Specific requirements vary by location — we advise during consultation and assist with the permit process if needed.
Opaque vinyl: 3–5 years on exterior glass, longer on interior. Perforated vinyl: 2–4 years on exterior. Interior application extends all lifespans since the glass shields the vinyl from weather and UV. South-facing windows in direct sun age faster than shaded glass.
Yes. Window wraps remove cleanly from glass with heat and slow peeling. Glass is non-porous, so there’s no risk of surface damage. Any adhesive residue cleans off with isopropyl alcohol or commercial remover.
Yes. NYC DOB requires windows on active construction sites to be covered. We produce branded wraps that meet compliance while marketing the project — developer branding, “coming soon” graphics, renderings, and leasing information.
Yes. Perforated vinyl on rear and side vehicle windows is one of the most common applications. We use 50/50 or 60/40 perforation for vehicles to maintain driver visibility. See our vehicle wraps page for full vehicle graphics.
