The Look of Real Gold Leaf — Without the Price of Gilding
Signs New York produces custom gold leaf vinyl lettering and decals that replicate the richness of traditional gold leaf at a fraction of the cost — and with significantly more durability and versatility.
We offer three distinct gold finishes, each CNC precision-cut in-house from premium metallic vinyl: Gold Leaf (warm, textured, classic), Brushed Gold (linear texture, modern), and Gold Foil (mirror-smooth, maximum shine). Every letter, logo, and design element is cut with razor-sharp accuracy on our CNC plotters, weeded by hand, and transfer-taped for seamless one-piece application.
Whether it’s the business name across a SoHo storefront, suite numbers on a law firm’s glass door, or a logo on a Midtown reception wall — gold vinyl lettering adds a level of finish that standard vinyl can’t match.

What Is Vinyl Gold Leaf Lettering?
Vinyl gold leaf is a metallic vinyl film with a gold-toned surface that replicates the appearance of traditional gold leaf gilding. The vinyl is CNC-cut into letters, logos, numbers, and graphic elements, then applied to glass, walls, metal, acrylic, and other smooth surfaces using adhesive backing and transfer tape.
Unlike traditional gilding — which involves applying thin sheets of genuine gold to a surface using size (adhesive), a process that’s labor-intensive, expensive, and fragile — vinyl gold leaf is durable, weather-resistant, removable, and significantly more affordable. It can be applied to any smooth surface in minutes, lasts 5–7+ years outdoors, and can be replaced or updated without damaging the underlying surface.
The result is lettering that reads as premium and high-end from street level, at a price point that makes it accessible for any business that wants to elevate its storefront, signage, or interior branding.
Vinyl Gold Leaf vs. Real Gold Leaf
Real gold leaf uses 22k–23k gold sheets applied by hand. Vinyl gold leaf uses metallic vinyl film cut by CNC. Both look premium — vinyl costs a fraction and lasts longer outdoors.
Gold Leaf vs. Metallic Gold Vinyl
Standard metallic gold vinyl is flat, one-dimensional color. Gold leaf vinyl has texture, depth, and light variation that more closely simulates genuine gilding.
Gold Leaf vs. Gold Foil
Gold Foil is one of our three finishes — a mirror-smooth, high-reflectivity gold surface. Gold Leaf finish has more organic texture. Both are vinyl.
Three Gold Finishes — One for Every Brand

Classic
Gold Leaf
Warm, organic texture that replicates the look of traditional hand-applied gold leaf. Subtle surface variation catches light naturally, creating depth and richness that flat metallic vinyl can’t achieve. The most traditional and timeless of the three finishes.
- Texture Organic, slightly irregular — mimics real gilding
- Shine Warm, soft sheen — not mirror-bright
- Best for Traditional storefronts, luxury retail, law firms, classic brands
- Outdoor life 5–7 years

Modern
Brushed Gold
Linear, directional brush strokes across the gold surface — similar to brushed brass or satin gold hardware. Reads as contemporary and refined rather than ornate. The finish of choice for modern office environments and minimalist brands.
- Texture Linear brush strokes — directional, consistent
- Shine Subdued, satin-level — muted reflectivity
- Best for Corporate offices, modern retail, co-working, financial firms
- Outdoor life 5–7 years

High-Shine
Gold Foil
Mirror-smooth, high-reflectivity gold surface with maximum shine. Catches and reflects light aggressively — impossible to miss from across the street. The boldest of the three finishes, designed for maximum storefront impact.
- Texture Smooth, mirror-flat — no surface variation
- Shine Maximum — mirror-level reflectivity
- Best for Storefront names, nightlife, salons, restaurants, bold brands
- Outdoor life 5–7 years

1st Surface vs. 2nd Surface — What You Need to Know
Standard gold leaf vinyl is designed for outside glass (1st surface) application. Inside glass requires a specialized film.
★ Standard
Outside Glass (1st Surface)
The gold vinyl is applied to the exterior-facing side of the glass. The metallic surface faces the viewer directly — maximum shine, maximum visibility, no glass between the eye and the gold. This is the standard application for all three finishes and the way the vast majority of gold lettering is installed on storefronts, glass doors, and transoms.
Exposed to weather and physical contact, but our premium metallic vinyl is rated for 5–7 years outdoors in NYC conditions.
Standard for: all storefront lettering, glass doors, transoms, all three finishes
Inside Glass (2nd Surface)
Inside glass application for gold vinyl requires a specialized 2nd-surface film — standard gold leaf vinyl is not suitable for reverse application. This specialty film is sourced on custom order, carries a longer turnaround time, and costs more than standard 1st-surface gold vinyl.
When it’s the right choice, the benefits are real: the glass protects the gold from weather, UV, physical contact, and vandalism, extending its lifespan well beyond what outside application achieves. The gold reads slightly warmer and softer through glass.
Contact us to discuss availability, timeline, and pricing if 2nd-surface gold is required for your project.
Custom order for: high-vandalism areas, landmark properties, premium longevity requirements

Caring for Gold Leaf Vinyl
Cleaning
Wipe gently with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive pads, and paper towels — they can dull the metallic surface. Use mild soap and water if needed. For gold on glass, clean the glass around the lettering, not across it.
Longevity
Outdoor gold vinyl lasts 5–7 years depending on sun exposure, orientation, and weather. South-facing storefronts in full sun will age faster than north-facing. Interior applications on walls and indoor glass can last 10+ years with normal care. For maximum longevity on exterior glass, ask about our specialty 2nd-surface gold film.
Replacement
Individual damaged letters can be replaced without redoing the entire installation — we store your templates on file. Old gold vinyl removes cleanly with heat and slow peeling. We also offer full removal and re-application as a single visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Vinyl gold leaf is a metallic vinyl film with a gold-toned surface that replicates the look of traditional gold leaf gilding. It’s CNC-cut into letters, logos, and graphics and applied to glass, walls, and other smooth surfaces using adhesive and transfer tape. It’s durable, removable, and costs a fraction of real gold leaf application.
Gold Leaf has a warm, organic texture that closely mimics hand-applied gilding — classic and traditional. Brushed Gold has linear brush strokes for a modern, satin look — similar to brushed brass hardware. Gold Foil is mirror-smooth and high-shine for maximum reflectivity and street impact. We’ll help you choose based on your brand, surface, and the look you’re going for.
Any smooth, non-porous surface: glass (windows, doors, transoms, partitions), painted walls, metal panels, acrylic, PVC, lacquered wood, and vehicles. Gold on a dark background (black, navy, charcoal) creates the highest contrast and most dramatic visual impact.
Yes. Our CNC plotters handle any typeface — serif, sans-serif, script, display — as well as custom logos and graphic elements. Fine serifs, thin scripts, and intricate details all cut cleanly in metallic vinyl. We’ll advise if any elements of your design are too fine for the chosen letter height.
Vinyl gold leaf typically costs 10–20% of what traditional gold leaf gilding costs for the same project. The savings come from material cost (no precious metals), faster production (CNC cutting vs. hand application), and simpler installation. For the vast majority of commercial applications, vinyl delivers the same visual result at a fraction of the investment.
Yes. We store your design templates on file, so if a letter is damaged, scratched, or peeled, we can cut and install a replacement without redoing the entire sign. This is another advantage over traditional gilding, where a single damaged letter often requires regilding the entire set.
Yes. Our installation team works across all five boroughs and the tri-state area. We coordinate with building management, provide Certificates of Insurance, and schedule installs around your business hours. For storefront lettering, most installations take 1–2 hours depending on scope.
