Overview
What is HDU?
HDU (high-density urethane) is a closed-cell rigid foam board engineered as a synthetic substitute for wood. It carves, routes, and sandblasts like fine-grained timber — but unlike wood it won’t rot, warp, crack, or absorb moisture, and it has no grain to telegraph through paint or split over time.
Those qualities make it the premium standard for dimensional carved and sandblasted signage destined for the outdoors: monument signs, entrance markers, and high-end storefronts expected to last for decades. It’s available in a range of densities, with higher densities giving finer detail and tougher surfaces.

Strengths & Considerations
Strengths
- Carves and sandblasts like wood with finer consistency
- Completely weatherproof — won't rot, warp, or absorb water
- No grain to split, telegraph, or crack over time
- Holds crisp detail and a long-lasting painted finish
- Ideal for decades-long outdoor dimensional signage
Considerations
- Higher material cost than wood or MDF
- Softer surface can dent under sharp impact (density-dependent)
- Requires priming and painting — not used bare
- Heavier carved pieces need proper mounting hardware
