Danger, Warning, Caution: What Each Header Means

OSHA 1926.200 establishes requirements for construction safety signs, including danger, caution, and safety instruction formats. ANSI Z535 provides additional guidance on warning and notice labels. Choose the appropriate signal word based on the severity of the hazard.

OSHA sets the standards for construction site safety signs, including colors, signal words, and visibility. NYC regulations determine where signs must be posted and which notices are required to meet local safety and compliance requirements.

What safety signs does a construction site need?

It depends on the hazards. Most sites post hard hat and PPE signs at the entrance, danger or keep out signs at open edges, holes and electrical gear, overhead work signs where loads move above, and fire extinguisher and first aid signs. In NYC, add the DOB panels on the fence and SST information for workers.

What is the difference between danger, warning and caution signs?

Danger is for a hazard that will kill or seriously hurt someone if it is ignored. Warning is for a hazard that could. Caution is for a possible minor injury or an unsafe practice. OSHA 1926.200 sets the danger and caution formats, and ANSI Z535 adds warning and notice.

Do you make bilingual safety signs?

Yes. English and Spanish on one sign is the most common request. We also print Chinese, Polish, Russian and other languages from your wording, with a proof before printing.

What size should a safety sign be?

18 x 24 in is the most common size for fences and entrances. 10 x 14 and 12 x 18 in suit doors and walls, and 24 x 36 in reads from farther away. A rule of thumb is about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance.

Which material should I pick?

Coroplast for short jobs and fence signs, aluminum for long jobs and posts, reflective aluminum for spots seen at night, and vinyl decals for doors and equipment.

Where do safety signs go on a NYC construction site?

Inside the site. Building Code 3301.9.5 says other signs required by law go where workers can see them, not where the public can, unless another law says otherwise. The street side of the fence is for the DOB project information panels.
