Privacy for Your Glass, Without Losing the Light

Glass conference rooms and partitions look great until you need a private meeting. Window frosting fixes that.

It is a thin translucent film, also called privacy window film, frosted glass film or frosted vinyl. It blurs the view through the glass while daylight still comes in. It gives the look of etched or sandblasted glass for far less, and it removes cleanly at the end of a lease.

First Surface

Film goes on the side you face. Quickest to install and replace. Best for most partitions and doors.

Second Surface

Film goes on the far side, so the glass protects it from hands and cleaning. Best for busy hallways.

Glass We Frost

Partitions, doors, conference rooms, sidelights and transoms, lobby glass, storefronts, exam rooms and restrooms. We check textured, dual pane and Low-E glass on the site survey.

Window Frosting vs Window Etching

Window etching changes the glass itself. Acid or sandblasting roughens the surface, so the look is permanent. Window frosting, sometimes called etched glass vinyl, is a film that gives the same look and comes off when you need it to.

Most of our clients choose film because it gives the etched look at a lower cost and can be updated when a tenant, brand or layout changes.

Distraction Markings for Glass Doors: NY and NJ Rules

Distraction markings, also called distraction marks or glass safety markings, are dots, strips, logos or frosted bands that make clear glass visible. New York and New Jersey both require them in commercial buildings. We design markings that meet the rule and look like part of your brand.

Two marking zones

One zone 30 to 36 inches above the floor, and one 60 to 66 inches above the floor.

Minimum size

At least 4 inches across, or 12 inches wide if narrower. Nothing under 1.5 inches tall.

Strips

Adhesive strips at least 1.5 inches tall, running across at least two thirds of the glass.

Upper zone exception

Not needed when a bar at least 1.5 inches tall crosses the full width of the glass 40 to 50 inches up.

Sidelights count

Fixed glass within 6 feet of a door must be marked too, with a few exceptions.

Your logo counts

A repeated logo, pattern or frosted band can serve as the marking.

Window Frosting Questions, Answered

How much does window frosting cost in NYC?

A single conference room starts at $1,500. Larger jobs are priced by the square foot of glass, plus design and installation. Send photos and rough sizes for an exact price.

How long does frosted window film last?

Indoors, 3 to 5 years depending on the film maker. Outdoors, about 5 years. Every install comes with a 1 year warranty.

Is window frosting permanent?

No. The film peels off with gentle heat and we clean off the adhesive, so the glass is left as it was. That makes it a good fit for rented offices.

Will frosting make the room dark?

No. Frosted film is translucent, so daylight still comes through. It spreads the light softly instead of blocking it.

Can people see through frosted film at night?

No. Frosted film blurs the view from both sides, day and night. When a room is lit, people outside may see soft shadows and shapes, but no detail.

Are glass door markings required in NY and NJ?

Yes, for clear glass doors and the fixed panels beside them in commercial buildings. In New York, markings go 30 to 36 inches and 60 to 66 inches above the floor.

Does frosted film reduce glare or block UV?

It cuts glare on screens near bright windows, and most films block some UV. If you need exact numbers for a building spec, ask us for the film’s data sheet.

Can frosted film go on any glass?

Most flat glass, yes: partitions, doors, sidelights and storefronts. We check textured, dual pane and Low-E glass on the site survey, because some exterior glass needs a film approved for it.

How long does installation take?

Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 working days from proof approval. We also offer rush production and overnight installs.

Can a tenant remove frosting at lease end?

Yes. We remove the film and clean off the adhesive, leaving the glass as it was.

What is the difference between frosted and perforated window film?

Frosted film is translucent and gives privacy from both sides. Perforated film carries a printed graphic on the outside and still lets people inside see out. See perforated window film.

How do I clean frosted window film?

Use a soft microfiber cloth with mild soap and water. Avoid ammonia cleaners, paper towels and scrub pads.
