What Goes on a Work in Progress Sign
In NYC the work in progress sign is the DOB project information panel on your construction fence. Building Code 3301.9.1.1 lists eight things it must show.
Across the top, followed by the use: Residential, Commercial, Mixed Use or Demolition.
When the work is expected to finish, such as a season and year.
The owner's corporate name, address and phone.
A website or phone number for updates, listed under For Additional Information.
The general contractor's name and phone, or the demolition contractor on demolition jobs.
The anonymous unsafe conditions line, in English and Spanish.
A laminated copy or a print of the primary permit, with the line to visit nyc.gov/buildings for other permits.
An exterior view, elevation or zoning diagram, with no logos. Not needed on demolition jobs.

It is the DOB project information panel required on construction fences by Building Code 3301.9.1. It shows a rendering, the project title, completion date, owner, contractor, the 311 safety line and the main permit.
6 ft wide by 4 ft high is standard. Lots with under 60 ft of street frontage use 55 x 36.5 in, and demolition jobs use 2 ft 4 in x 4 ft.
Only the title: Work in Progress: Residential, Commercial or Mixed Use. Size depends on your street frontage. The 2022 code removed the old simpler sign for one, two and three family homes.
White letters on DOB blue (Pantone 296), in Calibri or a similar plain font, at least 1 inch tall.
On the fence along each street frontage, with the bottom edge 4 ft above grade. Frontages over 150 ft also need a panel at each corner.
Yes. Workers need SST information in the languages they use on site, so we print English, Spanish and other languages in the DOB format.
Either works if it is flame retardant under NFPA 701 or UL 214. Coroplast is lighter and costs less for short jobs; aluminum is stiffer for long jobs and windy corners.
Most panels are printed the same day once we have your job details and an approved proof.
